Serum Love

Why use a Facial Oil?

Serums are lightweight moisturisers that have the ability to penetrate deeper to delivery active ingredients to your skin, such as more antioxidants, skin-replenishing, and skin-restoring ingredients. They may be called a Serum, Elixir or Facial Oil.

It’s true that every product in your skincare routine should contain a skin-loving array of antioxidants, replenishing, and skin-restoring ingredients. But serums are special: Serums are more advanced, concentrated formulations designed to address specific needs in a more focused, enriching manner. Serum is particularly suited to this task because it is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns, like repair work, and wrinkles.

Age Defiance

Using a facial serum before you start seeing signs of aging and environmental assault means you’ll be on track for getting (and keeping) the beautiful skin you want now and in the long term.

Keep in mind that just like your body never “gets used” to you eating healthy foods, nor does your skin get used to great ingredients. Your skin craves and needs generous amounts of the beneficial ingredients we mention above because each group helps skin to be healthy and stay young-looking. Using them now does not mean they won’t work “when you really need them” rather, they will be working for you every day of your life!

Of course, these ingredients also work even after signs of aging appear, but without question, sooner is better than later!

Do I still need a moisturiser?

A Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturising with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin.

The primary difference is that serums, elixirs and oils are able to penetrate the skin on a deeper level, whereas a moisturiser locks in hydration and protects the surface of the skin, enhancing the overall effects and benefits of the oil or serum.

There aren’t any hard and fast rules about whether you need both or not. It’s a matter of trialling what works best for you and your skin. It can also be dependent on climate, skin type and environmental conditions.

If you choose to use a serum and moisturiser, the layering effect will ultimately assist with balancing and hydrating the skin. The main thing to remember with layering is to allow each layer to penetrate before applying the next. You may have very dry skin and layering both suits you daily. Or you may like to layer only in the winter months. If you have oily skin, you will probably find using a facial oil or serum is plenty of hydration for your skin and you won’t need a moisturiser. In fact, a serum for oily skin is an essential product because the oils can penetrate at a deeper level than what a moisturiser can do, working to balance oil production in your skin.

Applying a Serum

I recommend using a Serum in the morning after Cleansing and Toning/Misting. Apply the Serum along with a few drops of water. This assists with penetration, as the skin requires both water and oil. You will only need 2-3 drops of each. You can then layer with your moisturiser for sun protection or if you need extra hydration.
